Dampproofing is one of the most effective ways to guard your basement floors and walls from soaking up with too much water. Basically, this method is made of the liquid asphalt that is applied to the outside part of the walls, during the construction of the house. It is not similar to waterproofing, which is used to seal the home from floods. Most people don’t realize that their basement are already leaking especially during rainy or snowy seasons.

§  Dampproofing is an effective way to slows the water seepage, but it cannot prevent it

§  Dampproofing is commonly alternated by builders to waterproof the basement because it is not that expensive.

§  After the asphalt had dried, it can become brittle as well as dissolved through water

§  Dampproofing cannot bridge the cracks within the foundation, which is very easy for the water to seep in.

Even though waterproofing is even pricier, it is very important to choose it because it may last for years. Dampproofing has been used until 1950’s. So, if the house is created before 1950’s it is more likely that you have to purchase dehumidifier to maintain the dryness of your basement.

Choosing Between Dampproofing and Waterproofing

Although, dampproofing is not usually the best ideal for foundation, it is also somewhat useful. In fact, some building uses this way to guard the basement from water. So it is still your option on how to choose either dampproofing and waterproofing.
